Movie Monday

Posted by WNO |

Finally sat down to check out "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" the other day and it was pretty funny. I shouldn't have been surprised though, with MICHAEL CERA as Scott Pilgrim and JASON SCHWARTZMAN as his nemesis Gideon Graves, there was bound to be plenty of laughter! Definitely worth checking out for a Movie Monday! Enjoy!

Game on! Scott Pilgrim just met the girl of his dreams…literally. But in order for them to date, he must defeat her seven evil exes -- a rogues' gallery -- including an infamous skateboarder, a vegan rock star and fearsome identical twins! From the genre-smashing director of Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead comes “a true original” (Entertainment Weekly) powered up by wit, action and groundbreaking visuals that you will want to watch again as soon as it’s over!

New Mixtape: Pac Div - Mania

Posted by WNO |

WNO are big fans of Pac Div, I think one of first ever post was a video for these guys! Needless to say when I saw that this had dropped I was so happy! I have a feeling this will be in rotation for a while!

Download: Pac Div - Mania

Check my footwork!! As soon as I saw these, I felt these were a must cop! Black, Yellow with Teal is a mean combo! The Teal accents the shoe perfectly by not over powering, but blending seamlessly. These will be great on a crisp spring night! Gotta hit the Adidas store in DC next time I'm there!

Do Guys Know That We...

Posted by WNO |

I just waxed my own lip for the first time and it went very well! I'm feeling like such a G I thought I should write about it, lol.

So I was talking to my homie Ms Heartache about my experience & telling her that I think I wanted to try to do my eyebrows & underarms next. We're all super pumped up, not because we don't routinely have these things done but because we are just figuring out that it is just as easy and a lot cheaper to do them ourselves! I understand that this is not news to some ladies who've mastered the art of self grooming long ago but I never thought I would be able to pour hot wax onto my skin & rip it off all by myself. I feel like a big girl... & a recession-proof frugalista diva!

Anywho, in addition to commenting on how much this would save me time & money I commented "& this will make me a good wife because if I can do this all the time, ANYTIME by myself, my future husband won't know that I wasn't born hairless!". I know that guys know most females have extensive grooming habits but I started wondering if they really know how involved the processes can be. And this isn't limited to grooming. Do guys really know all of the things we do to keep it sexy???

Hair done, nails done, everything did. That's pretty standard but did you know that we put bronzer on our boobs to enhance the look of our cleavage? Or that most females order light meals on a date not because they don't want to look fat & greedy but because they don't want to have to worry about a heavy meal's digestion & "exit strategy" if she decides to go home with you that night?

Women are perfect imperfections and the difference between a lady and an average chick is that a lady is able to manage those imperfections effortlessly. It's definitely ok (and highly recommended) to let your guard down and give your man as much as the real you when you are in a committed relationship but there is no need to get completely laxed with your physical appearance and throw out the window the things that first attracted him to you. Men are very aesethic creatures, being pleasing to the eye is always a plus.

Stalley - Lincoln Way Nights

Posted by WNO |

Today I woke up like it was Christmas to download Stalley's LNW mixtape only to be sadden to find out that it wasn't going to be released until later in the afternoon. With that being said it was well worth the wait!!! I was trying to hack the firewalls at my job just to find the download anywhere!!! (Rethinking that probably wasn't so smart, but that's how much I've been looking out for this project) Once I got in from my basketball game I ran right to the computer to download this and all I can say is wwwooowwww (Flavor Flav voice)! What's so crazy is that he gave this music away for free! This would've gotten my $15.00 easy! On that note...

I will try to get every one on a playlist.

These Are A Few Of My Favorite Things

Posted by WNO |

I like my men like I like my liquor, DARK! So I would have been like a horny, tipsy kid in a chocolate candy store at the Soho House on Tuesday night. Mechad Brooks ("Jerome" from The Game, "Eggs" from True Blood, Calvin Klein underwear model and "a new boyfriend!" from the State Farm commercial) hosted a private dinner sponsored by Hennessey Privilege at the posh West Hollywood restaurant with a few of his celeb friends including Solange, Hosea Chanchez, Jesse Williams and Tristan Wilde.

I have the biggest crush on Mechad Brooks! I see my whole future in his eyes **in my Beyonce voice**. I was just joking with a friend the other night about how I want to settle down with a "corny" dude. And while "corny" is a characteristic that I do not attribute to people in my adult life, my friends & I still use it to describe guys that we would have overlooked in our younger years because they lacked a certain degree of "swag" or "coolness". I don't know Mechad personally but something makes me believe he is just that type of guy - smart, sexy, successful & totally not trying to keep up with the Joneses.

While crushing on Mechad is one of my favorite things, I'm sad to say that Mechad may be bit out of my reach so I have to send a big shout out to my other favorite thing in this post that is always there when I need it... HENNESSY!!! I love a good French martini and try to enjoy a nice glass of wine on a regular basis, but Hennessy is def my favorite spirit. I'm not sure why, but there seems to be a stigma attached to females who drink dark liquor. What's that all about??? I can honestly say I've never had a Kanye West/Malik Wright kinda episode because of Hennessy, lol. You girly-girls can enjoy your vodka-induced hangovers, I'll take a glass of henny and a float on cloud nine for $1000 Alex. Henny & apple juice, that what you give me if you really tryna get me looooosssse **in my Keri Hilson voice**. My homie Ms. Heartache feels me on this. :-)

From the Archives of CallMeKarrie...

Posted by WNO |

I like having an audience but sometimes I write for the sake of writing. Whether it be to hone my skills or just to vent, I sometimes write with no intention of ever sharing it.

There are also some times I write with the intention of sharing it but then decide it stuff it in the CallMeKarrie archives. These type of posts never make it to the blogosphere for a number of various reasons but most often its because I think my opinions or observations will be perceived as negative. I never want anyone to leave a CallMeKarrie post thinking "oh, she's a hater" or "she's just mad because blah blah blah" or "damn, it must be that time of the month", lol.

Anywho, I would now like to share something I wrote a month ago, shoved into the archive but decided to give a second chance. Although the trigger has long faded in the oh-so-fickle and forgetting pop culture media environment, the heart of the article is timeless.

I present for your reading pleasure Beautiful Black Woman BUT... (written on January 6, 2011)

Ok, imma discuss this once & only once so here goes…

If you are a blog junkie like me, I’m sure you’ve already seen Lil Wayne’s alleged comment about dark-skinned women. If not, check it out here. While I won’t discuss the Lil Wayne situation specifically, I will address how it has been the most recent catalyst for the never-ending “dark vs light” debate that has being going on in the black community since massuh first defiled mammy.

Generalizations are for people who are generally stupid. Point. Blank. Period. To say that all people of one skin tone (or race, religion, whatever) are automatically more attractive or better than their counterparts at the other end of the spectrum just sounds silly. If you’ve never seen a “beautiful black woman” may need glasses or need to broaden your horizons. If you’ve never seen a manly, well endowed light-skinned dude, I feel sorry for you. If you have to qualify someone’s attractiveness by saying “you’re cute for a [insert skin tone & gender]”, well frankly, you just don’t really find them attractive. And that’s ok. Such is life.

No one can fault you for your preferences, we all have them, but if your preference is based on a negative generalization towards your OWN people, then #killyaself! Take off the mental shackles that enslave your niggorance and JUMP! I’ll send my condolences to your fam.

Furthermore, black women, please stop looking for love and validation in music videos and things of that nature. Should we see more positive images of black women of all skin tones in the media? Yes. Is a music video really where you want to see a reflection of yourself? Probably not (not unless you aspire to be a video vixen then hey, that’s your business).

Last but not least, to my beautiful black sisters that accompanied the Young Money crew to a hotel room to “chill”, were subsequently offended, and later sparked this debate: let’s cry a river, build a bridge & get over it. Group hug, collective exhale and back to your normally scheduled, uh, whatever it is that you do when you are not in hotel rooms w/Young Money.

Amazon Book Reveiw for BITNB

Posted by WNO |

Hola!

A few weeks ago I mentioned I was reading Bitch Is The New Black by Helena Andrews. I didn't do an actual review on it, but here is the review I left on Amazon if you are interested:

3 out of 5 Stars

Tried to love it... ended up thinking "eh, its ok", January 19, 2011

By Call Me Karrie

This review is from: Bitch Is the New Black: A Memoir (Hardcover)
I was somewhat familiar w/the author and had high hopes for this book. Her demographic being very similar to my own, I thought it would be like reading a transcript from a convo w/a friend. It definitely had its likable, funny and relatable moments but its randomness made it difficult for me to stay interested. I am a fan of stream of consciousness writing but I'm not even sure if that is what this is. The best way I can describe it is "patchy".

Overall, I think Andrews is a very interesting person w/a great story to tell but I think the way this book was written left a little to be desired (and I believe she is capable of better given her professional accomplishments as a journalist). As a reader, I do not need a book to have a pretty, definitive ending wrapped in a bow but I do like to feel that I have some sense of who the main character is and what the future may hold for her/him.

I would still recommend this to someone who is interested in the genre but would not recommend it for a book club.

10 MTV Shows that Make Us Long for Yesteryear

Posted by WNO |

Ran across this in the inbox and it brought back soooooo many memories. If you grew up in the 80's and 90's you definitely know exactly what I'm talking about.

Longing for the good ol' days of MTV has become a favorite pastime of Gen Xers, and for good reason. Before it essentially became a reality TV network geared toward teens, it was a pop culture phenomenon featuring a variety of legendary artists, VJs (video jockeys, if you forgot), comedians and other characters who made their bones on the cable channel. Many of them appeared on the shows listed below, which were must-see TV during MTV's prime in the '80s and '90s. If you really want to get nostalgic, view the accompanying videos and go on a YouTube excursion to find other classic MTV programs you may have forgotten.

Beavis and Butt-head, 1993-1997: The one constant at MTV through the years is the blame it has received for the moral decay of America's youth. Even with the recent popularity of shows like Jersey Shore, none have been more lambasted by self-righteous critics than Beavis and Butt-head. The animated show consisted of two unsupervised, dimwitted teenage boys who specialized in crude humor. Their hilarious misadventures and always-insightful critiques of rock and metal videos earned them quite a cult following.

No Love in The Club

Posted by WNO |

Where do you go to meet an ideal mate? This question is rhetorical but if I solicited answers from young, successful singles, I’m willing to bet my monthly liquor allowance that not one would say at the club. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Or maybe it is. I do not believe that the club is a prime location to meet an “ideal” mate, but I think the club unjustly has a bad rep in the dating world among uppity urbanites.

I’ve had this conversation with friends and associates many times before but just decided to write about it when a saw a comment from Hosea Chanchez (Malik from the hit BET series The Game) in his recent Vibe Magazine interview. When the interviewer asked Hosea where he is most likely to meet a woman he said at the airport. Hosea noticed that the interview was somewhat shocked by his answer and decided to explain saying:

Yeah, why do you sound so shocked? I wouldn’t meet her at a club. If you are probably in the club you probably aren’t the chick for me.

Oh, ok. I want to believe that if given more time to elaborate, Hosea would say that he is not interested in women that spend all of their free time and disposable income partying. And that’s definitely understandable and respectable. But, what I find a bit troubling is that I’ve heard plenty of others, male and female, echo the same sentiment with no such elaboration. It’s usually just cut and dry “if I meet you in the club, I can’t take you seriously”.

Are all clubs Sodom & Gomorrah? Do only bad people go to the club? If you meet someone in the club and you can’t take them seriously because you met them in said club, should they also not take you seriously because you too, on this one particular night which may or may not have been one of many OR a rare occasion were also in said aforementioned club?

AND, I know some people that leave the club on Saturday in just enough time to make it to church on Sunday, where do they fall into this whole debate???

I’m kinda playing devils advocate here because my “club” days are long gone but yall know how I feel about generalizations and this is just one I would like to debunk. And please, cut the BS with the “I don’t go to clubs, I go to bar, lounges, hang-outs & chill spots” because they’re all a slightly more mature and sophisticated version of the same animal. A rose by any other name…

I can go on but I will stop here with this: don’t block your blessings being hung up on generalizations. Get to know the would-be suitor eyeing you from the end of the bar the same way you would the one eyeing you from the end of the pew before you judge him/her.

Meet Cassius Clay, the 19 year old Yale University student turned personal stylist and creative consultant to Mr. Kanye West. In case you are wondering, no he is not named after boxer Muhammad Ali. Both Ali and Clay are actually named after Clay’s ancestor, Cassius Marcellus Clay, the 19th century abolitionist and politician.

As fate would have it, Mr. West stumbled upon Clay one day while shopping for high-end Italian leather shoes in Barney’s. Mr. West was intrigued by Clay's style, which prompted him to compliment Clay on his taste in shoes and fashion. From there, the two struck up a convo and exchanged information. I'm not sure what was discussed during the 30 minute convo. But the next day, Mr. West purchased a controlling share in the Italian shoe company and contacted Clay to bring him on board as designer. If my baby like to eat, ima buy a restaurant. I kid!

Any who, Clay is now a member of Kanye's entourage and personally selects most of his garments. Opening Ceremony was the first site to get an official interview with the style maverick. During the interview he mentions where he wants to be in 5 years and what he would be doing now if he could. Click here to read the entire article.

The moral of the story is, sometimes opportunity only knocks once. Be prepared!
Spotted : Heartache...or Couture?

Hey WNO fam! I'm reading a cool new book and wanted to share it with you. It's called Bitch is the New Black and is by a young, black and fabulous journalist named Helena Andrews (who is quickly replacing Necole Bitchie as my imaginary BFF).

Being the urban wanna-be Carrie Bradshaw that I am, I had heard of Helena and her book before it went on sale this past summer but initially had some reservations about diving head first into it. With mainstream media shoving the single, black, professional female meme down our throats, I was afraid that Helena, and the intelligent & credible sister that she is, may be jumping on the bandwagon & negatively cosigning. Although I liked what I had seen of her in interviews, I was afraid that her book may position her as the Michael Steele of single, black, professional females, lol. The book sat in my Amazon shopping cart for months and I finally purchased it with one of my fabulous Amazon giftcards I received for Christmas. I'm glad to report that I am half way done reading the book and that my initial fears are unfounded.

**CallMeKarrie Time-Out: That paragraph was full of fellatio imagery juxtaposed with socio-political commentary. See what I just did. I talk dirty but my mouth clean. Take that, take that... Now back to my regularly scheduled program**

I'm not on Helena's payroll, so I will end my praise here for now. Not sure if I'll do a formal "book review" but I will def refer to it in my posts. Its a cool book, check it out and tell me what you think.

In closing, I'll leave you with my favorite line from Chapter 1 that got me hooked:

Only Jesus knows how badly I want to f*ck him right now.

Hilarious!

Recently checked out one of our new followers on twitter called PROOF. They create very unique sunglasses from Wood. From what I've seen from them I'm anxious to get a pair in my hands! Can we get some custom WNO/PROOF frames? The thing I like about their shades are the details that they add to their frames. We've highlighted wood sunglasses before and they were fresh, but the attention to detail that I've seen from PROOF is what will help them Distinguish their brand from the rest.
