Amazon Book Reveiw for BITNB

Posted by WNO |

Hola!

A few weeks ago I mentioned I was reading Bitch Is The New Black by Helena Andrews. I didn't do an actual review on it, but here is the review I left on Amazon if you are interested:

3 out of 5 Stars

Tried to love it... ended up thinking "eh, its ok", January 19, 2011

By Call Me Karrie

This review is from: Bitch Is the New Black: A Memoir (Hardcover)
I was somewhat familiar w/the author and had high hopes for this book. Her demographic being very similar to my own, I thought it would be like reading a transcript from a convo w/a friend. It definitely had its likable, funny and relatable moments but its randomness made it difficult for me to stay interested. I am a fan of stream of consciousness writing but I'm not even sure if that is what this is. The best way I can describe it is "patchy".

Overall, I think Andrews is a very interesting person w/a great story to tell but I think the way this book was written left a little to be desired (and I believe she is capable of better given her professional accomplishments as a journalist). As a reader, I do not need a book to have a pretty, definitive ending wrapped in a bow but I do like to feel that I have some sense of who the main character is and what the future may hold for her/him.

I would still recommend this to someone who is interested in the genre but would not recommend it for a book club.

10 MTV Shows that Make Us Long for Yesteryear

Posted by WNO |

Ran across this in the inbox and it brought back soooooo many memories. If you grew up in the 80's and 90's you definitely know exactly what I'm talking about.

Longing for the good ol' days of MTV has become a favorite pastime of Gen Xers, and for good reason. Before it essentially became a reality TV network geared toward teens, it was a pop culture phenomenon featuring a variety of legendary artists, VJs (video jockeys, if you forgot), comedians and other characters who made their bones on the cable channel. Many of them appeared on the shows listed below, which were must-see TV during MTV's prime in the '80s and '90s. If you really want to get nostalgic, view the accompanying videos and go on a YouTube excursion to find other classic MTV programs you may have forgotten.

Beavis and Butt-head, 1993-1997: The one constant at MTV through the years is the blame it has received for the moral decay of America's youth. Even with the recent popularity of shows like Jersey Shore, none have been more lambasted by self-righteous critics than Beavis and Butt-head. The animated show consisted of two unsupervised, dimwitted teenage boys who specialized in crude humor. Their hilarious misadventures and always-insightful critiques of rock and metal videos earned them quite a cult following.

No Love in The Club

Posted by WNO |

Where do you go to meet an ideal mate? This question is rhetorical but if I solicited answers from young, successful singles, I’m willing to bet my monthly liquor allowance that not one would say at the club. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Or maybe it is. I do not believe that the club is a prime location to meet an “ideal” mate, but I think the club unjustly has a bad rep in the dating world among uppity urbanites.

I’ve had this conversation with friends and associates many times before but just decided to write about it when a saw a comment from Hosea Chanchez (Malik from the hit BET series The Game) in his recent Vibe Magazine interview. When the interviewer asked Hosea where he is most likely to meet a woman he said at the airport. Hosea noticed that the interview was somewhat shocked by his answer and decided to explain saying:

Yeah, why do you sound so shocked? I wouldn’t meet her at a club. If you are probably in the club you probably aren’t the chick for me.

Oh, ok. I want to believe that if given more time to elaborate, Hosea would say that he is not interested in women that spend all of their free time and disposable income partying. And that’s definitely understandable and respectable. But, what I find a bit troubling is that I’ve heard plenty of others, male and female, echo the same sentiment with no such elaboration. It’s usually just cut and dry “if I meet you in the club, I can’t take you seriously”.

Are all clubs Sodom & Gomorrah? Do only bad people go to the club? If you meet someone in the club and you can’t take them seriously because you met them in said club, should they also not take you seriously because you too, on this one particular night which may or may not have been one of many OR a rare occasion were also in said aforementioned club?

AND, I know some people that leave the club on Saturday in just enough time to make it to church on Sunday, where do they fall into this whole debate???

I’m kinda playing devils advocate here because my “club” days are long gone but yall know how I feel about generalizations and this is just one I would like to debunk. And please, cut the BS with the “I don’t go to clubs, I go to bar, lounges, hang-outs & chill spots” because they’re all a slightly more mature and sophisticated version of the same animal. A rose by any other name…

I can go on but I will stop here with this: don’t block your blessings being hung up on generalizations. Get to know the would-be suitor eyeing you from the end of the bar the same way you would the one eyeing you from the end of the pew before you judge him/her.

Meet Cassius Clay, the 19 year old Yale University student turned personal stylist and creative consultant to Mr. Kanye West. In case you are wondering, no he is not named after boxer Muhammad Ali. Both Ali and Clay are actually named after Clay’s ancestor, Cassius Marcellus Clay, the 19th century abolitionist and politician.

As fate would have it, Mr. West stumbled upon Clay one day while shopping for high-end Italian leather shoes in Barney’s. Mr. West was intrigued by Clay's style, which prompted him to compliment Clay on his taste in shoes and fashion. From there, the two struck up a convo and exchanged information. I'm not sure what was discussed during the 30 minute convo. But the next day, Mr. West purchased a controlling share in the Italian shoe company and contacted Clay to bring him on board as designer. If my baby like to eat, ima buy a restaurant. I kid!

Any who, Clay is now a member of Kanye's entourage and personally selects most of his garments. Opening Ceremony was the first site to get an official interview with the style maverick. During the interview he mentions where he wants to be in 5 years and what he would be doing now if he could. Click here to read the entire article.

The moral of the story is, sometimes opportunity only knocks once. Be prepared!
Spotted : Heartache...or Couture?

Hey WNO fam! I'm reading a cool new book and wanted to share it with you. It's called Bitch is the New Black and is by a young, black and fabulous journalist named Helena Andrews (who is quickly replacing Necole Bitchie as my imaginary BFF).

Being the urban wanna-be Carrie Bradshaw that I am, I had heard of Helena and her book before it went on sale this past summer but initially had some reservations about diving head first into it. With mainstream media shoving the single, black, professional female meme down our throats, I was afraid that Helena, and the intelligent & credible sister that she is, may be jumping on the bandwagon & negatively cosigning. Although I liked what I had seen of her in interviews, I was afraid that her book may position her as the Michael Steele of single, black, professional females, lol. The book sat in my Amazon shopping cart for months and I finally purchased it with one of my fabulous Amazon giftcards I received for Christmas. I'm glad to report that I am half way done reading the book and that my initial fears are unfounded.

**CallMeKarrie Time-Out: That paragraph was full of fellatio imagery juxtaposed with socio-political commentary. See what I just did. I talk dirty but my mouth clean. Take that, take that... Now back to my regularly scheduled program**

I'm not on Helena's payroll, so I will end my praise here for now. Not sure if I'll do a formal "book review" but I will def refer to it in my posts. Its a cool book, check it out and tell me what you think.

In closing, I'll leave you with my favorite line from Chapter 1 that got me hooked:

Only Jesus knows how badly I want to f*ck him right now.

Hilarious!

PROOF Sunglasses

Posted by WNO |

Recently checked out one of our new followers on twitter called PROOF. They create very unique sunglasses from Wood. From what I've seen from them I'm anxious to get a pair in my hands! Can we get some custom WNO/PROOF frames? The thing I like about their shades are the details that they add to their frames. We've highlighted wood sunglasses before and they were fresh, but the attention to detail that I've seen from PROOF is what will help them Distinguish their brand from the rest. Check them out at iwantproof.com!

Really don't have much to say, but download the latest mixtape from "Spitta". It definitely starts off great with Day's of Thunder and Rain Delay. When you hear these tracks come on you'll immediately love the grove as he goes in over familiar Rick Ross and Reakwon beats... Good way to start of 2011 with a new mixtape from Curren$y!

Oprah starts off her Master Class series with a bang with none other than Jay-Z. The format that Oprah uses for Master Class is pretty dope as she lets the guest tell their story how they want it to be told. Jay-Z doesn't disappoint as the opening guest, so take some time and check it out. Definitely looking forward to following the rest of this series!
