Stalley - Lincoln Way Nights

Posted by WNO |

Today I woke up like it was Christmas to download Stalley's LNW mixtape only to be sadden to find out that it wasn't going to be released until later in the afternoon. With that being said it was well worth the wait!!! I was trying to hack the firewalls at my job just to find the download anywhere!!! (Rethinking that probably wasn't so smart, but that's how much I've been looking out for this project) Once I got in from my basketball game I ran right to the computer to download this and all I can say is wwwooowwww (Flavor Flav voice)! What's so crazy is that he gave this music away for free! This would've gotten my $15.00 easy! On that note...

"OHIO STAND UP!"

Christmas Gift Ideas for Women

Posted by WNO |

Ho, Ho Ho! Merry Christmas! It’s Mrs. Clause aka H.O.C. here to give you saints and sinners some Christmas gift ideas for your hoes, sidepieces, girls, wives and/ or any combination there of.
I’m going to give it to you simple, girls aren’t ungrateful, men just don’t use their brains when selecting a gift. Women want something sentimental, something that no one else ever got them, something they can remember you by. The price of the gift does not matter, the thought that went into the gift is what counts. For instance, if your girl is complaining about being stressed from work and everyday life, a gift card to the spa is nice. But an overnight stay for the two of you at a quaint boutique hotel where she can use the spa gift card is even better. Hold up! Let me finish before you start counting your coins and complaining. Sites like groupon.com, jetsetter.com and livingsocial.com often have deals for such hotels. Go to the sites and register as a member to receive daily emails for specials.

A typical yet wonderful gift for women is perfume. What woman doesn’t wear perfume? Even women who are allergic to it like me still wear it…don’t judge me. Add something extra to the perfume bottle by having it engraved. Every Nordstrom store has an engraver that comes to the fragrance section during the month of December to engrave bottles purchased at Nordstrom for free. Call your local Nordstrom stores to check the dates and times. Some classic fragrance options include:

Lolita Lempicka

Jean Paul Gaultier

Viktor & Rolf 'Flowerbomb'

Believe it or not a wonderful gift option for women is electronics. We like gadgets too! Apple now offers engraving on iPods and iPads for free also. If you purchase either option, be sure to have it engraved and go the extra mile to add that special someone’s favorite songs, movies or even t.v. shows. I guarantee she will love it!

Women like sparkly gifts! You can’t go wrong with jewelry. A statement necklace, bracelet or watch will let her know that you really care. And when I statement I’m talking about a piece that stands out, not something that looks like you picked it up from a the bubble gum machine on your way to her house. Peep the samples below to get a visual of the statement pieces. Stores like Bebe, Arden B., Nordstrom and even Target have a plethora of affordable jewelry options.

Fallon Victoria Swag Bib

Fallon Stud Spike Comet Earrings

Lanvin Metallic Strand Pearl Necklace

If you happen to be the bomb boyfriend and been there done that with all of these options feel free to hit me up, I have plenty of other gift options. Until next time, yall be cool!

The Chronicles - Mark Ward

Posted by WNO |

This week The Hundreds brings us Mark Ward in their Chronicles series...

Words: Maurice Pendarvis

Photos: Mark Ward

What got you into doing art?

I grew up drawing all the time. It’s what I found I got recognition for as a kid. I was copying cereal boxes, and coming up with my own characters. I was the typical arty kid – felt tip pens everywhere, making stuff from old boxes, fascinated by Disney etc. At first school I used to get gold stars for my drawings, but had red pen all over the actual written work. I was far more interested in the visuals than writing stories. That has just stuck with me through life, and I’ve ended up pretty much doing the same thing.

Were you self-trained or did you go to college?

I went to Central St Martins in London. I specialized in advertising, as I liked the challenge of creating solid concepts. It gave me a good grounding and forced me not to rely just on the aesthetic side of things. It was pretty hardcore, with a lot of frustration at times. Alongside advertising I kept myself busy with my own work. I’d say my aesthetic is all self taught. A lot of trial and error…

Check out the rest of the interview Here.

Chronicles - Jorge Peniche

Posted by WNO |

Words: Maurice Pendarvis

What got you interested in photography?

My interest in photography…well in all honestly, was nothing I planned on doing. It was not something I planned on as a profession. I’ve always been fascinated by the power of photography, not to the extent that I am today, but, it was always something that interested me. Anything that deals with imagery and visuals is something that I’ve always been interested in.

What is it about Los Angeles that inspires you as a photographer?

LA is an amazing place, for better or for worse. The majority of the people that live here, I’ve come to find out, through the last couple of years, they’re not from here. This is the land of hustle and bustle, and fake it ‘till you make it, and smoke and mirrors. But what inspires me or causes curiosity about LA, is everything. I mean, this is the land that gave birth to gang culture, hate it or love it; it was something that was born here in Los Angeles. LA has so many things, you have Hollywood, which some people think is very glamorous but when you actually go to Hollywood Blvd, its not so glamorous. You have people living out of their suitcase, trying to figure out what it is they’re trying to do, why they’re here, when they’re going back. LA, is just the Mecca of opportunities and the Mecca of missed opportunities.

Graffiti DC - The Art of War Poetry Slam

Posted by WNO |

D.C.’s premier promotion and entertainment company, Beny Blaq Entertainment, will launch its first monthly poetry slam at Liv on July 21st. Every third Wednesday, poetry lovers can find Graffiti DC right in the center of U Street’s urban nightlife. The event will bring a slam competition to a city where spoken word is still a novelty.

On why he chose to do a slam event, Beny Blaq, CEO of BBE said, "I wanted to cover all aspects of the art form within the DMV.” After three years of success with The @ttic, D.C.’s biggest spoken word event, Blaq believes Graffiti DC “will take slam poetry to another level.”

If you don’t know what a poetry slam is, imagine young poets setting themselves apart from their peers with their performance, their visual expression and the lingering passion the audience feels when they finish speaking their heart out on the stage. At the end of it all, the winning poet receives a grand prize of $2,000.

Poets who have a healthy appetite for competition can use “Graffiti DC as a platform for the next generation of entertainers and entrepreneurs to showcase their talents through competition,” said Nyasha Chikowore, GDC Coordinator. “If anything, the series will encourage young people in the DMV to strive for greatness.”

ABOUT BBE: Beny Blaq Entertainment, LLC (BBE) is a DC based promotion company that provides a variety of entertainment, performing arts and networking events. We not only expose our patrons to a unique nightlife brand, but instill a greater appreciation for the arts in a comfortable and classy environment. Here's an interview from "The Hundreds" series "Chronicles" on Designer Anthony Harrison. Thought this was a dope read so check it out!

WORDS: JOHN HALL
PICTURES: ANTHONY HARRISON

What was your entry point into the design field?

I was an intern for an illustrator of children’s books. She worked out of her apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan (Woody Allen’s Universe.) She was paid an advance and got 6 months to complete her work. Macs were just coming into use and she was talking about buying something called a ’scanner’ to get her reference photos into the computer. From there I interned at Jive records and The Source Magazine’s Art Department. My first actual paid position was as a Junior Designer at Arista records.

Read the rest here!

Ran across this the other day while at the book store. Definitely thinking about adding this as a staple to the Coffee Table collection(might be time for a bigger Coffee Table)! I've been getting into my collections of art, but since I can't afford any of Mr. Warhols' classics this book will be the next closet thing to one! You can find it online at Phaidon. It'll run you around $50.00 but from what I saw it's definitely worth the purchase!
