French Connection Autumn/Winter '10

Posted by WNO |

As I get older my taste in garments are beginning to change... Don't get me wrong I still love all of my favorite street-wear brands, but being a part of the corporate world has forced me to alter some of my style a bit. Versatility is a major choice when purchasing items for the wardrobe now-a-days and these are a few items I recently picked up to help with that transition. I have to say French Connection has always been on my radar but I never really purchased anything until I came across these dope sweaters... FCUK paid a lot of attention to detail when creating these pieces, needless to say these will definitely be staples in my collection. Oh yea, got to have a little bit of fun and switch it up with the Kurt Cobain tee! Check out more FCUK online!

Meant to throw this up a while ago, but late is better than never.... Big Krit does a good job adding Kyleon and Curren$y to this remix... Can't even lie, I probably listen to this cut everyday! Enjoy!

Alfred Chair by LORIS&LIVIA

Posted by WNO |

Ran across this the other day while looking for creative options to redecorate my house. I thought this was a creative spin on the obvious. The "Alfred" serves as more than just a chair but as a staple of eye catching and functional furniture! I love the fact that its simple but can add so much texture to a room. The REAL MJ Experience

Posted by WNO |

Happy Holidays WNO Fam!

My holiday season has been great so far. I literally spent all of Christmas Day playing Michael Jackson The Experience on Wii. Seriously, I think everyone should own this game. Its definitely one the whole family can enjoy and who can resist great Michael Jackson classics.

For those not familiar, MJ The Experience is a dance challenge game where you earn points for executing dance moves correctly. You can perform as Michael, a duo partner or as a back up dancer. I probably performed Dirty Diana at least a half dozen times. Dirty Diana is so cool because it’s an upbeat, sexy duo w/Michael and a female dancer. Although, the dancers are Wii animations, the chemistry is electric, lol.

Watching the Wii animation of MJ dance so sensually and hearing all of his sexually-charged lyrics made me wonder… how many females have really had an “MJ Experience”??? I love Michael Jackson and this is in no way meant to be blasphemous or disrespectful (may his soul rest in peace) but I can’t help but wonder. MJ the man always seemed timid and asexual but MJ the artist was hot!!! I’ve never looked at MJ and thought “he can get” it but for those few moments this weekend I spent as Dirty Diana, MJ could have definitely taken me home.

MJ is not alone. There are many artists who exude so much sex appeal on stage/in their music that doesn’t necessarily transpire to their personal lives (or at least what we perceive of it). I can remember my mom saying she felt that way about Luther Vandross, how is music would make women swoon but she never could actually imagine him making a women swoon. I know some women will want to burn me at the stake for what I am about to say BUT… I feel the same way about Maxwell. The same has been said about Ne-Yo. Some haters have made the claim about Trey Songz (yes, that was bias because when Trey says he will beat it up, I believe it!!!).

IDK. While rumors of homosexually have plagued all of the aforementioned, that’s not even my point. I know plenty of heterosexual guys that just don’t have what it takes to get me hot & bothered. **CallMeKarrieShrug – yeah, eff a Kayne, I’m owning this in 2011** Maybe it’s the male equivalent of a female tease w/a weak sex game. Am I reaching? Probably so, but them n***** shoulda never gave me a platform. That’s what happens when you unleash the random mind of CallMeKarrie. #evl

What do you think??? Who are some of the artists selling sex that you would not patronize if given the real-life opportunity?

Christmas Gift Ideas for Women

Posted by WNO |

Ho, Ho Ho! Merry Christmas! It’s Mrs. Clause aka H.O.C. here to give you saints and sinners some Christmas gift ideas for your hoes, sidepieces, girls, wives and/ or any combination there of.
I’m going to give it to you simple, girls aren’t ungrateful, men just don’t use their brains when selecting a gift. Women want something sentimental, something that no one else ever got them, something they can remember you by. The price of the gift does not matter, the thought that went into the gift is what counts. For instance, if your girl is complaining about being stressed from work and everyday life, a gift card to the spa is nice. But an overnight stay for the two of you at a quaint boutique hotel where she can use the spa gift card is even better. Hold up! Let me finish before you start counting your coins and complaining. Sites like groupon.com, jetsetter.com and livingsocial.com often have deals for such hotels. Go to the sites and register as a member to receive daily emails for specials.

A typical yet wonderful gift for women is perfume. What woman doesn’t wear perfume? Even women who are allergic to it like me still wear it…don’t judge me. Add something extra to the perfume bottle by having it engraved. Every Nordstrom store has an engraver that comes to the fragrance section during the month of December to engrave bottles purchased at Nordstrom for free. Call your local Nordstrom stores to check the dates and times. Some classic fragrance options include:

Lolita Lempicka

Jean Paul Gaultier

Viktor & Rolf 'Flowerbomb'

Believe it or not a wonderful gift option for women is electronics. We like gadgets too! Apple now offers engraving on iPods and iPads for free also. If you purchase either option, be sure to have it engraved and go the extra mile to add that special someone’s favorite songs, movies or even t.v. shows. I guarantee she will love it!

Women like sparkly gifts! You can’t go wrong with jewelry. A statement necklace, bracelet or watch will let her know that you really care. And when I statement I’m talking about a piece that stands out, not something that looks like you picked it up from a the bubble gum machine on your way to her house. Peep the samples below to get a visual of the statement pieces. Stores like Bebe, Arden B., Nordstrom and even Target have a plethora of affordable jewelry options.

Fallon Victoria Swag Bib

Fallon Stud Spike Comet Earrings

Lanvin Metallic Strand Pearl Necklace

If you happen to be the bomb boyfriend and been there done that with all of these options feel free to hit me up, I have plenty of other gift options. Until next time, yall be cool!

Class is in Session // Winter '10 Fashion

Posted by WNO |

Allow me to introduce myself, my name is HOC. H to the O.C. !
Ha! Just kidding! My name is Karla Smith and it’s a pleasure to make
your acquaintance. I am also known as Ms. Heartache or Couture. Named
so because I suffer frequent heartaches over the couture pieces that I cannot
afford. But it’s ok. Anyone who knows fashion knows that labels have nothing
to do with STYLE! Style is created, transformed, imagined, and executed with
what you have. Not with who made it! And I plan to prove it. My plan is to show
you all how to be stylish without going broke. Because we all know that there
is nothing fashionable about being broke! So takes notes people. And don’t be
afraid to ask questions, I don’t bite. But you can feel free to do so. Imitation is
the highest form of flattery, so feel free to bite me whenever you want.
Hehe… I kid, I kid.
Ok, settle down class, today’s lesson is this fall’s fashion trends.

Cuffin' Season

Posted by WNO |

**I’m making short-term goals when the weather folds**

Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall, Cuffin’. Yup, that sounds about right. It’s that time of year; leaves turn color, the air chills and all of a sudden everybody is in a relationship state-of-mind. I would never promote entering a relationship for shallow reasons, buttttttt… I’m about to promote entering a relationship for shallow reasons, lol.

Here are CallMeKarrie’s Top Five Reasons You Should Cuff or Be Cuffed (in no particular order… & they’re not my Top Five, just the first five I could think of):

1. Snowed-in Buddy – The Mid Atlantic Region was hit hard last winter w/some of the highest snowfalls we’ve seen in decades. Snow is Mother Nature’s fluffy white aphrodisiac that you won’t catch charge for. Snow is also a get-out-of-work-free card. & nothing is better than being bunned up all day & night knowing that you won’t have to get up for work in the morning.

2. Shovel Buddy – While all the indoor activities of Reason 1 are fun, sooner or later reality hits and you will have to leave the house. If you get snowed-in w/someone, you also know that they will be there to help dig you out. << double entendre

3. Gifts! – There are a lot of gift-giving holidays during Cuffin’ Season. If you are racially-ambiguous enough to claim to be part Christian, Jewish & Pan-african, your boo will buying or making you gifts for weeks!

4. You’re usually fat & less attractive this time of year – Keep it real. Most people work out hard to perfect their “beach bodies”. When it’s cold outside we usually let ourselves go a little and enjoy all of the great holiday food. Only your boo (and some chubby-chasers) will think your new pouch is cute.

5. Its too damn cold to creep, make booty calls & go to the club – No explanation needed

Have you cuffed or been cuffed yet? What are some other good reasons to cuff or be cuffed???

Yesterday was World AIDS Day. Relationships and dating can be full of wonderful things, sex being one of them, but it is important to be responsible. When you have unprotected sex, you are literally putting your life in the hands of your partner.

I remember Hydeia Broadbent from her appearances on Oprah and other large media outlets as a young AIDS victim and advocate. She is beautiful and her philanthropy is amazing & inspiring. I was pleased to see her recent blog post on Necole Bitchie yesterday. Although doctors believed she would not live past the age of six, at 26, Hydeia is still dynamic in her AIDS awareness efforts.

Here is Hydeia's blog “What does HIV Mean To Hip Hop”:

Since HIV is hitting the African American community the hardest it should mean a lot. While HIV is not something that just affects African American, and Hip Hop is not something just black people enjoy or support, we can’t ignore the facts.

Just like Hip Hop runs through the blood of our inner cities, so does HIV. Like Hip Hop, the fight against AIDS has been watered down. We are complacent with the medical advancements made just as Hip Hop is complacent with its commercial success.

Hip Hop’s lyrical content seems to be only about sex, popping bottles, and clothes. It has forgotten how to make people think. Today’s Hip Hop reflects a void of understanding within our community.

When it comes to AIDS in the African American community we have chosen to turn a blind eye and not talk about it. It makes us comfortable to ignore the subject. The fact is our community is being hit the hardest. How can we remain silent any longer?
What happened to the Hip Hop campaigns in the early 1990s that told us to “Rap It Up?” Maybe some people are happy that we, as a community, have not learned how to work together in fighting HIV/AIDS or learned how to educate our brothers and sisters on safe sex. A line that replays in my head from Nas’ song “If I ruled the World” exclaims, “It’s elementary, they want us all gone eventually.”

AIDS has not gone away. It has become a silent killer in the African American community because we have forgotten how to speak up and speak out. We don’t seem to care about our neighbors or ourselves. This is evident in the lack of responsibility people are taking with their own sexual health. CDC estimates that more than one million people are living with HIV in the United States. One in five (21%) of those people living with HIV is unaware of their infection. This means that people could be unknowingly infecting others. At what point will we start talking about HIV without our minds drifting to the long held misconception that it is a gay disease? The H in HIV stands for human, meaning any part of the human body that gives life, or preserves life can transmit HIV.

While African Americans make up only 12% of the US population, we make up 50% of all new diagnosis of HIV. For my African American women, HIV infection is nearly 15 times as high as that of white women and nearly 4 times that of Hispanic/Latina women.
My Black men, unlike the lyrics in today’s Hip Hop would have you believe, our sexual behavior does have consequences. You account for two-thirds of new infections (65%) among all blacks.
We have to talk to our sexual partners about HIV and STD’s like our life depends on it because guess what, it does. We have to become responsible for the images we portray and the lifestyles that we glamorize. I challenge you today to: 1) Get tested. Know your status. Early detection can be the difference between life and death. 2) Educate yourself on HIV/AIDS. 3) Talk about it to your family friends’ co-workers. Talk about HIV on Twitter, Facebook or whatever social media site you may use. Just speak up.

AIDS is killing our people because of our fear of being judged if we bring up the subject. Well excuse me but I cannot and will not sit back and watch the demise of my community because of fear of what people will think of me, can you?
Who will be the new pioneers in Hip Hop? Who will be the new voice of protest within our community?

December 1st is World AIDS Day. This is an opportunity to raise awareness, commemorate those who have passed on, and celebrate victories such as increased access to treatment and prevention services, BUT December 1st is also the day Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus, sparking the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The act of one person standing up for what is right set in motion the act of followers following and speaking up!
Who will be the Rosa Parks of today?
