What Does HIV Mean to Hip Hop

Yesterday was World AIDS Day. Relationships and dating can be full of wonderful things, sex being one of them, but it is important to be responsible. When you have unprotected sex, you are literally putting your life in the hands of your partner.
I remember Hydeia Broadbent from her appearances on Oprah and other large media outlets as a young AIDS victim and advocate. She is beautiful and her philanthropy is amazing & inspiring. I was pleased to see her recent blog post on Necole Bitchie yesterday. Although doctors believed she would not live past the age of six, at 26, Hydeia is still dynamic in her AIDS awareness efforts.
Here is Hydeia's blog “What does HIV Mean To Hip Hop”:
Since HIV is hitting the African American community the hardest it should mean a lot. While HIV is not something that just affects African American, and Hip Hop is not something just black people enjoy or support, we can’t ignore the facts.
Just like Hip Hop runs through the blood of our inner cities, so does HIV. Like Hip Hop, the fight against AIDS has been watered down. We are complacent with the medical advancements made just as Hip Hop is complacent with its commercial success.
Hip Hop’s lyrical content seems to be only about sex, popping bottles, and clothes. It has forgotten how to make people think. Today’s Hip Hop reflects a void of understanding within our community.
When it comes to AIDS in the African American community we have chosen to turn a blind eye and not talk about it. It makes us comfortable to ignore the subject. The fact is our community is being hit the hardest. How can we remain silent any longer?
What happened to the Hip Hop campaigns in the early 1990s that told us to “Rap It Up?” Maybe some people are happy that we, as a community, have not learned how to work together in fighting HIV/AIDS or learned how to educate our brothers and sisters on safe sex. A line that replays in my head from Nas’ song “If I ruled the World” exclaims, “It’s elementary, they want us all gone eventually.”
AIDS has not gone away. It has become a silent killer in the African American community because we have forgotten how to speak up and speak out. We don’t seem to care about our neighbors or ourselves. This is evident in the lack of responsibility people are taking with their own sexual health. CDC estimates that more than one million people are living with HIV in the United States. One in five (21%) of those people living with HIV is unaware of their infection. This means that people could be unknowingly infecting others. At what point will we start talking about HIV without our minds drifting to the long held misconception that it is a gay disease? The H in HIV stands for human, meaning any part of the human body that gives life, or preserves life can transmit HIV.
While African Americans make up only 12% of the US population, we make up 50% of all new diagnosis of HIV. For my African American women, HIV infection is nearly 15 times as high as that of white women and nearly 4 times that of Hispanic/Latina women.
My Black men, unlike the lyrics in today’s Hip Hop would have you believe, our sexual behavior does have consequences. You account for two-thirds of new infections (65%) among all blacks.
We have to talk to our sexual partners about HIV and STD’s like our life depends on it because guess what, it does. We have to become responsible for the images we portray and the lifestyles that we glamorize. I challenge you today to: 1) Get tested. Know your status. Early detection can be the difference between life and death. 2) Educate yourself on HIV/AIDS. 3) Talk about it to your family friends’ co-workers. Talk about HIV on Twitter, Facebook or whatever social media site you may use. Just speak up.
AIDS is killing our people because of our fear of being judged if we bring up the subject. Well excuse me but I cannot and will not sit back and watch the demise of my community because of fear of what people will think of me, can you?
Who will be the new pioneers in Hip Hop? Who will be the new voice of protest within our community?
December 1st is World AIDS Day. This is an opportunity to raise awareness, commemorate those who have passed on, and celebrate victories such as increased access to treatment and prevention services, BUT December 1st is also the day Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus, sparking the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The act of one person standing up for what is right set in motion the act of followers following and speaking up!
Who will be the Rosa Parks of today?

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — The three Atlantic City casinos once run by Donald Trump filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Tuesday _ for the third time.
Trump Entertainment Resorts made the filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Camden, N.J., four days after the real estate mogul whose name remains on the company and its three seaside gambling resorts resigned as chairman of its board.
Trump was frustrated that bond holders and their allies on the board rebuffed his offer to buy the company and take it private.
"Other than the fact that it has my name on it _ which I'm not thrilled about _ I have nothing to do with the company," Trump told The Associated Press Tuesday.
He acknowledged being sad over the end of a venture that was so publicly and relentlessly associated with his name and image. Yet he said the company "represents substantially less than 1 percent of my net worth, and has for some time."
"If I can't manage something, it's not for me," said Trump, who still holds 28 percent of the company's stock.
The company has $2.06 billion in assets and more than $1.74 billion in liabilities, according to its court filing.
All three of the company's casinos will continue to operate as usual during the bankruptcy proceedings.

NEW YORK — Citigroup Inc. said Wednesday that board member Richard Parsons _ the former CEO of Time Warner _ will be taking over as chairman.
Parsons succeeds Win Bischoff, who became chairman in December 2007 after the company let go of its embattled CEO and chairman at the time, Charles Prince. The move is effective Feb. 23.

Bischoff is not putting himself up for re-election at the board's annual meeting this spring, and will retire later this year, Citigroup said.
The ailing bank has suffered five straight quarters of losses and received $45 billion in government aid as it struggles to stay afloat amid the credit crisis. Last week, the company said it would reorganize into two units as it reported a fourth-quarter loss of $8.29 billion.
Citigroup's board has been the target of much scrutiny among investors for allowing the bank to invest so heavily in the risky housing market.
As that criticism escalated over the past several weeks, so did speculation that Parsons _ one of the only directors with experience in both banking and leading a large company _ would become chairman.
Before helping negotiate Time Warner's merger with America Online in 2000 and serving as the new company's CEO and chairman, Parsons was chief executive and chairman of Dime Bancorp, a thrift bank, in the early 1990s.
Parsons was also an economic adviser on President Barack Obama's transition team.
Citigroup said separately in a filing Wednesday with the Securities and Exchange Commission that top three executives _ including Bischoff _ have passed up bonuses. Bischoff, Chief Executive Vikram Pandit and Chief Financial Officer Gary Crittenden have declined incentive and retention awards that were offered to members of the bank's executive committee, Citi said.
Long-time board member Robert Rubin, a former U.S. Treasury Secretary, said earlier this month that he, too, would be retiring from Citigroup.
Citigroup shares rose 87 cents, or 31 percent, to $3.67 on Wednesday, before the announcement was made. In after-hours trading, shares were flat. The stock reached a 17-year low on Tuesday.
PARIS — Police acting on a warning Tuesday found a bundle of dynamite inside a Paris department store at the height of the Christmas season, and a group demanding that France withdraw from Afghanistan claimed responsibility.
Sticks of dynamite tied together but without a detonator were found in the Printemps department store, a favored shopping destination for tourists, and a Christmas season attraction because of its festive window displays.
Interior Minister Michele Alliot-Marie said the explosives appeared "relatively old." Police said they were found in the third floor restroom of the menswear department. Five sticks were found together, officials said.
"There was no risk of explosion," the minister said.
French news agency Agence France-Presse said it received a letter Tuesday morning from a group calling itself the Afghan Revolutionary Front saying that several bombs had been planted in the store. Police said they searched the store and found the dynamite because of the warning.
Alliot-Marie said the group was "totally unknown" to police but that the claim was being studied.
In the letter, the group demanded the withdrawal of French troops from Afghanistan before the end of February, and threatened attacks if France refuses.
"Otherwise we will go back into action in your big capitalist stores and this time without warning you," the letter said, according to AFP.
President Nicolas Sarkozy, who has increased France's troop levels in Afghanistan, quickly stressed that he would not bend to terrorism. France has 2,800 troops in Afghanistan.
"We need to be vigilant about terrorism. That is the only right policy. We have to be firm. We cannot compromise with terrorists," Sarkozy said.
Officers cordoned off streets around the building. Anti-crime brigades and bomb squads were called in.
Store employees and customers left the building.
"It's worrying, but there's no reason to panic," said Evelyne Bredy, a sportswear saleswoman who works on the third floor, where the explosives were found. She and a shivering colleague waited outside the store while police with sniffer dogs worked inside.
"We're used to it. It happens," she said. "There are often suspicious packages _ though maybe not this type of evacuation."

Ford Motor Company CEO Alan Mulally who has agreed to take a salary reduction from about $20 Million to $1.00 if Ford receives $25 Billion in emergency loans from taxpayers has said that instead of taking his private jet like last time he will take the 10 hour drive from Detroit to Washington D.C. Alan was smart enough to make the whole thing into a publicity stunt and drive two Ford electric-gas vehicles. Read More!!!
The pirates fired at the passenger liner but the larger boat was faster than the pirates' vessels, Choong said.
"It is very fortunate that the liner managed to escape," he said, urging all ships to remain vigilant in the area.
The U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet, based in Bahrain, said it was aware of the failed hijacking but did not have further details.
Ship owner Oceania Cruises Inc. identified the vessel as the M/S Nautica.
In a statement on its Web site, the company said pirates fired eight rifle shots at the liner, but that the ship's captain increased speed and managed to outrun the skiffs.
All passengers and crew are safe and there was no damage to the vessel, it said.
The Nautica was on a 32-day cruise from Rome to Singapore, with stops at ports in Italy, Egypt, Oman, Dubai, India, Malaysia and Thailand, the Web site said. Based on that schedule, the liner was headed from Egypt to Oman when it was attacked.
The liner arrived in the southern Oman port city of Salalah on Monday morning, and the passengers toured the city before leaving for the capital, Muscat, Monday evening, an official of the Oman Tourism Ministry said Tuesday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.
The head of a shipping agency branch in Salalah had contact with the liner there.
"They talked about pirates opening fire at their ship off the Somalian shores," Khalil Shaker told The Associated Press by telephone. He said he had no details of the attack.
It is not the first time a cruise liner has been attacked. In 2005, pirates opened fire on the Seabourn Spirit about 100 miles (160 kilometers) off the Somali coast. The faster cruise ship managed to escape, and used a long-range acoustic device -- which blasts a painful wave of sound -- to distract the pirates.
International warships patrol the area and have created a security corridor in the region under a U.S.-led initiative, but the attacks have not abated.
In about 100 attacks on ships off the Somali coast this year, 40 vessels have been hijacked, Choong said. Fourteen remain in the hands of pirates along with more than 250 crew members.
In two if the most daring attacks, pirates seized a Ukrainian freighter loaded with 33 battle tanks in September, and on Nov. 15, a Saudi oil tanker carrying $100 million worth of crude oil.
Ukraine's Foreign Ministry spokesman Vasyl Kyrylych said Monday that negotiations with Somali pirates holding the cargo ship MV Faina are nearly completed, the Interfax news agency reported.
A spokesman for the Faina's owner said Sunday that the Somali pirates had agreed on a ransom for the ship and it could be released within days.
Somalia has not had a functioning government since 1991, and pirates have taken advantage of the country's lawlessness to launch attacks on foreign shipping from the Somali coast. Around 100 ships have been attacked so far this year.
Somali prime minister Nur Hassan Hussein said Tuesday that his country has been torn apart by 18 years of civil war and cannot stop piracy alone.
"This needs a tremendous effort," Hussein told The Associated Press. He has appealed for international troops, as his government's Ethiopian allies have said they would pull out their forces by the end of the year.
Ethiopia, the region's military powerhouse, has been integral in boosting the government. But Islamic insurgents have now seized control of all of southern Somalia except for the capital and the parliamentary seat of Baidoa.
People nationwide may start hoarding their cash as recession fears grow. But in Riverwest--a progressive enclave of Milwaukee--residents have another answer to their money trouble: they'll print their own. The proposed River Currency would be used like cash at local businesses, keeping the area economy humming whatever the health of the country at large. "We can create our own value," explains Sura Faraj, 48, one of the plan's organizers.
It's an attractive idea when times are tight. Communities print what look like ordinary bills with serial numbers, anti-counterfeiting details and images of local landmarks (the Milwaukee River, for instance) instead of presidential portraits. Residents benefit through an exchange system: 10 traditional dollars, for instance, nets them $20 worth of local currency. And when businesses agree to value the funny money like real greenbacks, they also get a free stack to kick-start spending.
